Challenging
Behaviour: a seminar on legal and medical issues
11 Nov 2003
The Scottish Executive has recently reported an alarming increase in
violent incidences against members of staff. Anecdotally, there
is a trend towards disobedience, insolence and abuse among some
pupils in schools. Yet there are also pressures on schools to
reduce the number of exclusions and to drive forward the social
inclusion agenda in schools. Coupled with this, new legislation
on disability discrimination means that it may often be unlawful to
discipline or exclude pupils for behaviour which is caused by or
related to a disability.
This seminar explores the complex practical and legal issues arising
from the incidence of challenging behaviour in schools, including
suggestions and advice on the appropriate ways to deal with behaviour
arising from a disability.
