Out of school trips: a national conference on legal & safety issues

4 December 2003

In March 2003, a school in Salford, England was fined £3,500 in a Health and Safety Executive prosecution arising from an accident during a school holiday in Snowdonia.  The HSE urged schools not to be deterred from running school trips and educational visits but stressed the need for proper planning and organisation.

This conference aims to take the fear out of organising school trips by explaining the legal duties which apply and advising on how to put them into practice.  Speakers from the Health & Safety Executive, the Scottish Child Law Centre and Govan Law Centre (among others) offer valuable insights into the practical steps which can be taken to minimise risks to children on out of school trips, and will provide the answers to these tricky questions:

*  How do we tackle the practical difficulties which school trips present?

*  Whose consent does the school need to obtain?

*  If a pupil is injured, will we be held responsible?

*  What health & safety requirements do we have to comply with?

*  When is it unlawful to leave disabled pupils out?

*  How can we make sure our pupils are safe?

Venue: Lendrick Muir, Rumbling Bridge, Kinross KY13 0QA.  Lendrick Muir is Scripture Union Scotland's largest residential activity centre and hosts school trips on a regular basis.  Its location is central and within an hour's drive of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Perth and Stirling.  Lunch will be followed by a presentation and tour of the premises, providing you with an understanding of how safety issues are handled in practice at a residential outdoor centre.

Timing: Registration is at 10am and the Conference ends at 2.30pm.

Cost: The conference is provided for a total cost of £95 + VAT per delegate.
